80 years in Hinckley Town Centre

Hinckley Shoe Repairs Celebrates 80 Years of Service

A long-established and much-loved town centre business is celebrating a remarkable milestone this year as Hinckley Shoe Repairs marks 80 years since the company was incorporated on 5 April 1946.

A staple of Hinckley town centre for generations, the shop has become a local institution, known for its reliable service and loyal customer base. When asked what has kept him working in the market town for so many years, owner Steve said: “The customers – I have fantastic, loyal customers.”

The business was originally owned by Tommy Lewis, who employed three staff members: Don Quittington, Al Frost and Steve’s father, Frank. Frank later became a partner before eventually purchasing the business. In the early years, Steve’s uncle Sid also worked alongside his father, helping to build the strong foundations the shop still stands on today.

Steve himself has worked in the shop for 52 years, having started at just 15 years old. His brother, Mark Lavender, also played a significant role in the business, working alongside him for more than 40 years. Together, the family’s dedication has been central to the shop’s long-standing success and reputation.

Over the decades, Hinckley Shoe Repairs has become known for its quality workmanship and dependable service. One loyal customer summed up its enduring appeal, saying: “You’ve always got what I want.”

While shoe repairs remain at the heart of the business, the shop also repairs handbags and provides a key cutting service. In addition, it offers a range of accessories including laces, shoe polish and a selection of leather goods. All repairs are carried out on the premises.

As the business celebrates its 80th anniversary, there is more good news for customers: Steve has recently signed a new five-year lease, ensuring that this valued town centre service will continue for years to come.
