Roof Safety and your responsibility

Children on roofs?

Landlords have a responsibility!

Over the years and definitely recently, children/teens are climbing on roofs which is extremely dangerous. Unfortunately someone fell through a roof in the town a month or so a go and again only last week slates landed in Castle Street from them being on the roofs late at night.

Police, HBBC and multi agencies are aware and working to resolve this but as Landlords and business owners there is a responsibility and if the worse happened are you covered and done all you can to prevent it.

Ensuring the safety in these environments is paramount, particularly when it comes to preventing access to potentially hazardous areas such as business rooftops. Rooftops can pose serious risks, including falls from heights, exposure to hazardous materials, and entrapment in machinery or equipment. Businesses have a legal and moral responsibility to implement measures that deter children from accessing these areas, thereby safeguarding not only their well-being but also the integrity of the property.

One effective strategy for preventing unauthorised access to rooftops is the installation of secure barriers and access control systems. This may include high fences, locked doors, and alarm systems that alert security personnel when someone attempts to gain access. Additionally, businesses can engage in community outreach to educate families about the dangers of climbing onto roofs and encourage them to discuss safety with their children. By raising awareness, businesses can foster a culture of safety that extends beyond their premises.

Do you do regular maintenance and inspections of rooftop areas this can help identify potential hazards that could attract children. Businesses should ensure that any equipment or materials stored on rooftops are secured and not easily accessible. Collaborating with local authorities to develop safety protocols, such as signage warning of the dangers and establishing clear guidelines for emergency responders, can further enhance safety measures. Ultimately, a proactive approach that combines physical security, community education, and ongoing vigilance can significantly reduce the risk of children accessing business rooftops and ensure a safer environment for all. Leicestershire Grassroots Food Plan - can you help?

Dear All,

Leicestershire Grassroots Food Plan – Can you help with a research project?

Academics from Nottingham University working on the Leicestershire Grassroots Food Plan have requested our help in sourcing a range of stakeholders within the Leicestershire food system to take part in short online interviews as part of a pilot programme. They are keen to contact a range of local food system actors including:

  • Farmers and primary producers
  • Artisan food and drink producers
  • Retailers
  • Social supermarkets
  • Public health bodies
  • Local authority employees

There is no requirement to undertake any preparation prior to the interview. The pilot project will challenge existing policies and approaches to the local food system and implement a food plan that reflects citizen’s needs.
