Are you ready for the Digital Switchover?
Local Support for the Digital Switchover!
Did you know...
Some major changes will be happening to the way you receive your TV reception!
• Switchover affects any TV that receives its signal from an aerial. Television signals can be received via an aerial, satellite, cable or broadband connection.
• Switchover will affect how you record TV programmes. This is because most video recorders and some older DVD recorders have an analogue tuner in them, not a digital one.
• All households with a Freeview TV, Freeview set-top box or a Freeview recorder will need to re-tune at both stages of switchover.
The technical bit:
Currently local relay transmitters are only able to transmit an analogue TV signal. After switchover, for the first time, all transmitters including local relay transmitters will transmit a digital signal and increase the number of channels available from around 5 to more than 40.
The exact number is dependent on whether you receive your signal from a main transmitter, or a relay one. A relay station will typically enable 15 channels to be received, including the 5 main ones. If you use an aerial, it will receive its signal from a transmitter. In the UK, there are more than 1,150 transmitters organised into around 80 transmitter groups that will switch to digital one by one.
Each group has a main switchover transmitter and local relay transmitters.
Key dates for the Switch over:
Sutton Coldfield Transmitter Central: 07 Sep 2011 - Stage 1
21 Sep 2011 - Stage 2
